Spastic Cerebral Palsy
By David Austin of Burke-Eisner
Spastic cerebral palsy children have limited movement of the joints and they have muscle stiffness. Nearly 80 percent of cerebral palsy patients have spastic cerebral palsy. Children of spastic cerebral palsy find if difficulty moving from position to another and they find it hard to hold things and letting go of them. Types of Spastic Cerebral Palsy Spastic cerebral palsy has different types and it depends what area of the body is affected. There is a type that affects one limb on their body and that is called Monoplegia. Hemiplegia affects one side of the body. Affecting the legs and the arms is called Diplegia. Triplegia that affects three limbs and affecting all four movements of the limb is Quadriplegia. Diagnosing Spastic Cerebral Palsy Determining if a child has spastic cerebral palsy is not always easy. The medical staff is responsible for making the mother and baby feel comfortable. It is their duty to be prompt when things go wrong such as preterm delivery. If there are questions about your baby’s health then tests are done. Doctors perform MRIs. Ultrasounds, and CT scans. If you think your baby has some symptoms of cerebral palsy you need to take your child to see a physician right away. Treatments for Spastic Cerebral Palsy Treatments are given to children with cerebral palsy depending on their type. Physical therapy will help the child to strengthen their muscles, and decrease spasticity. Children also may have occupational therapy that will assist with fine motor skills like eating. Some patients go swimming as a form of exercise therapy. Children also go through surgeries to increase joint motion and reduce spasticity. Does Your Child Have Spastic Cerebral Palsy? Parents need to be assured they are taken care of when they are in labor and delivery. They depend of the medical staff to make sure everything is going accordingly, so when something happens to their child they want to know why. Sometimes there are cases where the mother or baby gets an infection, lack of oxygen, or the baby has severe jaundice. The medical staff needs to be aware of their surroundings during the delivery. They need to tend to the mother and baby as needed. However, there are cases where medical malpractice may have taken place. If this has happened parents need to talk to a lawyer right away. Cases like these have a statute of limitations so you don’t want to put it off. Contact a Lawyer Today There are lawyers in your area that will help you get the compensation you deserve. Families get into financial stress because of the therapies, surgeries, and medicine their children have to get and insurance doesn’t always cover it. Talk to an experienced lawyer that knows about medical malpractice and they will give you legal advice you need. |
