MDS Blood

By David Austin of Burke-Eisner

How Does MDS Affect the Blood?

These are the three types of specialized blood cells produced and developed in the bone marrow:

Red blood cells (or erythrocytes). There are 600 red blood cells for every white blood cell. These contain hemoglobin that gives blood its reddish color and carries oxygen from the lungs to all the tissues in the body. Lack of healthy red blood cells can cause chronic fatigue, weakness, paleness, and shortness of breath.

White blood cells (or leukocytes). White blood cells are important parts of the immune system; thus, shortage of these could lead to frequent infections.

Platelets. These are actually fragments of bone marrow cells. Platelets help form clots to control bleeding and repair damaged blood vessels. Too few platelets often lead to bleeding and bruising.

Once released into the bloodstream, the expected lifespan of red blood cells is 120 days and only a few hours or a few days for the white blood cells and platelets. The bone marrow is expected to produce millions of blood cells because millions normally die every day. The balance between new and old cells inside the body is partly controlled by substances in bone marrow called growth factors.

With MDS or myelodysplastic syndromes, the stem cells that normally mature into different blood cells, die while inside the bone marrow or just after their release into the bloodstream.

Some known factors that may cause secondary MDS are: exposure to radiation from chemotherapy treatments, pesticides and toxic chemicals like benzene. Benzene is a known carcinogen often found in cigarette smoke and gasoline.
