Cerebral Palsy Treatment
By David Austin of Burke-Eisner
Treatments are given to patients with cerebral palsy so that they are able to cope with their discomforts better. Cerebral palsy has no cure so treatments are the only alternative methods for patients dealing with cerebral palsy. Depending on the patients types of cerebral palsy determines what treatment will be given to them. A team of professionals including, therapists, pediatricians, and psychologists will observe the patient and put a plan together that is fit them based on their findings. Treatments will improve movements of muscles and help with vision and hearing problems. Types of Treatments include: Physical therapy – One common treatment is physical therapy. This treatment helps motor control of the patient. At times using braces or casts to help stretch the muscle providing more motor control. Speech therapy – Cerebral palsy patients at times find it difficult to communicate with others. Speech therapy provides easier ways to communicate. Occupational therapy – With occupational therapy children can learn how to do everyday chores around the home or in the workplace. Medication – Many patients with CP experience muscle spasms. With medications such as Botox, it will help relax the muscles, making it easier to control these spasms. Surgery – When other treatments aren’t working as well as thought, surgery may be another option. This treatment can help improve muscle tone. Hearing aids, eyeglasses – With most CP patients comes vision and hearing impairments. These treatments will help them improve their hearing and vision. Assistive technologies – Assistive technologies such as wheelchairs and communications devices help cerebral palsy children with the everyday duties they must do. Other CP treatments – Other treatments have been known to show promise in the past years, such as space suit therapy, hippotherapy, and conductive education. Clinical trials – Clinical trials are conducted in order to try to develop new treatments for cerebral palsy patients. The Cost of Cerebral Palsy Treatment The costs to care for a child with cerebral palsy are overwhelming for families. Costs for treatments exceed $500,000. There are times where insurance won’t cover all of the treatments and for those with no insurance, the costs are unbearable.
