Cerebral Palsy Symptoms

By Dave Austin of Burke-Eisner

In most cases, cerebral palsy (CP) is already present at birth; but children living with cerebral palsy are typically diagnosed when they reached 1 to 3 years of age. This is because signs of development delays only become evident during growth years. However, not all children will show similar signs of the disorder. The cerebral palsy symptoms usually depend on the severity of the condition.

Different types of cerebral palsy include:

Spastic Cerebral Palsy – is the most common type, which causes muscles to be stiff and contracted permanently.

Here are 5 sub-types of spastic CP:

Diplegia (both arms or both legs): scissors gait and toe-walking

Hemiplegia (two limbs on one side of the body): tremors or uncontrollable shaking, seizures, vision problems, and muscle dysfunctions in the muscles of mouth and tongue

Quadriplegia (four limbs): cognitive difficulties, seizures, and oral muscles dysfunctions

Monoplegia (only one limb – which is rare)

Triplegia (any three limbs – also rare)

Athetoid CP – is the type that causes abnormal body movements: jerking, twisting, and uncontrolled writhing movements; hearing loss, grimacing or drooling, and speech problems.

Ataxic CP – is a rare type that causes poor coordination, failure to perceive depth, lack of balance, unsteady gait, and intention tremor.

Mixed CP – typically involves two or more types of CP. Most common combinations are: athetoid-spastic-hemiplegic and athetodic-spastic-diplegic. Extremely rare type is: athetoid-ataxic. Spastic-athetoid-ataxic combination is also possible.

Risk factors of cerebral palsy include:

•Premature birth

•Low birth weight (less than 5 pounds)

•No cry within 5 minutes after delivery

•Need ventilator for more than 1 month

•Brain hemorrhage

•Complications during gestation period

•Breech birth

•In-born defects

•Seizures in newborn infants

•Complications during labor and child delivery

•Multiple births

•Low Apgar score – 0 (low), 1 (intermediate), or 2 (normal) scores on the following: skin color, reflexes, muscle tone, breathing, and heart rate.

Diagnostic procedure for cerebral palsy involves tests like:

•MRI
•CT scan
•EEG
•Reflex tests
•Blood tests
